Introduction:

Tribulus Terrestris also known as Bindii, is a plant that produces fruit covered with spines. It is also known as thorn plant. Tribulus terrestris is one of a few species of the tribulus genera and the most commonly supplemented species. The root extract consists of various essential components. It is a plant from Ayurveda where the root and fruits are used for male virility and general vitality, respectively.

The roots enhance libido and sexual well being without affecting testosterone while the fruits appear to be potently protective of organ function. (1)

Composition:

The main components of the tribulus terrestris root extract include:

• Hecogenin-3-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl(1 → 4)-β-d-galactopyranoside
• Gitogenin type saponins called Protodibestin and tribestin

Protodioscine the main bioactive ingredient of Tribulus Terrestris:

Protodioscine creates improvements in the quantity, quality of sperms, in sex drive, erection, ejaculation, and orgasm qualities in treated males along with increased mobility of sperms. (16)

Mechanism:

The mechanism included a reaction involving the nitric oxide/nitric oxide synthase pathway and endothelium of the Corpus cavernosum (erectile tissues forming the bulk of penis). Moreover, an in vivo study, showed a significant concentration-dependent increase in intracarvenous pressure (experimental index for the evaluation of penile erection). Accordingly, the T. terrestris extract improves erectile function. (18)

Libido/Sexual Desire Enhancer:

A tribulus terrestris extract (Bulgarian, thus higher protodioscin) seems to be able to increase androgen receptor (AR) immunoreactivity in the rat hypothalamus when dosed at 5mg/kg bodyweight for 8 weeks. Hence, expression of the androgen receptor increases in the brain, leading to libido enhancing effects. (20)

A study in fertile boars with combination therapy of tribulus terrestris, noted that 11mg/kg oral administration (correlating to a 750mg oral dose for a 70kg human) increased mounting behaviour by 20% and increase seminal volume. (21)

Aphrodisiac:

It is a confirmed aphrodisiac in various animal models. At 50mg/kg and 100mg/kg in sexually sluggish male rats which noted dose-dependent increases in all parameters of sexuality and penile function increasing with prolonged administration. (22)

Increases Sperm count:

In men with low sperm count, supplementation of 6g tribulus root is associated with a significantly greater improvement in sexual health (assessed by survey) by 49.38% which was greater than placebo (27.80%). (23)

Penile Erection:

The T. terrestris extract induced concentration-dependent relaxation of the Corpus carvernosum (erectile tissues forming the bulk of the penis) in an organ bath. (24)

Tribulus terrestris extracts appear to be fairly effective in reducing pain perception in response to chemical and heat pain tests, with potency comparable to some reference drugs. (26)

Testicular health:

5mg/kg tribulus terrestris in rats is able to attenute cadmium-induced testicular toxicity when preloaded. (29)

 Testicular weight:

Testicular weight may be increased with triblus supplementation without any abnormal changes in histological examination. (30)
